Summer Scholars

Summer Scholars is a fun-filled five-week residential and academically focused program for incoming first-year students who want to begin college early.

Benefits of being a Summer Scholar include:

  • Getting to know faculty, staff, and other students before the fall semester begins
  • Taking two classes and earning 6 credits towards your degree
  • Experiencing living in a VCU residence hall
  • Participating in outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting on the James River
  • Visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA)
  • Touring the area surrounding VCU's Monroe Park Campus

Who is eligible?

Summer Scholars is for first-year degree-seeking students who are admitted to VCU for the fall semester. We have more than 10 different cohorts, and because some are major based and some are identity based, many students experience the benefits of participating in multiple cohorts.

The You First at VCU cohort is for first-generation college students! You First students will get to know each other, connect with first-generation peer mentors, participate in campus scavenger hunts, and learn about the “hidden curriculum” of college–in other words, decoding the college lingo.

How to apply

Beginning in late February, students who have been accepted into VCU will receive an email invitation to apply to Summer Scholars. Students accepted to VCU after the first round of invitations goes out will receive an invitation to apply within a few days of their official offer of acceptance.
