Discover You First

Students

Are you a first-generation college student? If so, you are automatically a member of the You First at VCU community! Any student whose parents did not complete a four-year degree is considered a first-generation student. Some of you may have siblings who are attending college or who completed a degree–you and your siblings are part of the same generation. You’re all first-gen!

We understand that not everyone who identifies as first generation fits this definition. Our goal is to provide students with the knowledge and confidence to successfully achieve their dream of earning a college degree, so if you’re not clear on whether you’re first-gen, that’s perfectly fine–you are welcome here. Visit our Students pages to learn more about the many opportunities we have for first-gen students.

Faculty and Staff

Are you a first-generation faculty or staff member? Are you a faculty or staff member who wants to support first-gen students or conduct student success-related research? The You First at VCU First-Generation Student Success and Research Center has opportunities for VCU employees to connect with first-gen students, apply for research grants, participate in faculty and staff learning communities, and become a You First Ambassador.

Visit our Faculty and Staff pages for more information on how you can participate.
